Wife of Minister

Last night i was watching news and heard about the next government and the new generation.

Then i turn over and ask my mum
()- think

hime : issit good to be the minister wife?
joou : why?
hime : (stay at home, dun need work) just wondering only
joou : if i'm minister wife, i'll be on newspaper everyday
hime : ?
joou : for my coarse language
hime : (thought of her violent)

hime conclude that if her hubby is a minister, then the hubby will be in the news not because of winning an election but as a victim of D.V. (Domestic Violence)

Love Revolution

Monday night i started to re-watch Love Revolution.
It was a show that i used to memorise all the key conversation but this time when i watch i realise i cannot even remember some small scenes~

haha~ a 8 yrs old show. now when watching, i can feel the age of the disc too.

i remember watching it from a rental shop and was crying becoz my PC spolit and the VCD player has no sound. i couldn't finish watching it.

Thanks to the nice person in the rental shop~ i manage to got an extension to finish the whole show.

This is one of the key drama that i love.

Maybe i should rank some drama that i really like~

Horror Films

A(looking at "The Wig" poster) : Shiok! Another asian horror film.

B: why is it in western horror, the monster is usually a crazed male killer with a weapon, while in asian horror, the monster is either a young woman with long hair or a child?

B: i mean what does it say about asian society that it fears young women and children?

A: eh.. It's every asian man's nightmare to be confronted by a woman with a child, okay? And they are more likely to turn up than an armed killer!

B: Point Taken.

Monday Blue~

super blue~ no mood to work or anything at all.

morning:
manage to do some program specs. however due to some errors, had to re-do some part and spent the whole morning doing 2 screens only.. haiz..

lunch:
went robinson with candice to collect my clarin 10-days trial (high-body definition lift).
but so dissappointed with the packaging.
last night when jason bring me the hydra sth from clarin and i was very happy with the packaging. coz is tube in boxes. and today? i got sashay!! tks lor~ and 3 sashay somemore for 10 days trial. i think i'll finish in 3 days ba~ but seriously speaking, if it is working, i'm going to buy it~ slimming is the every-day word in my dictionary.

had our meal @ aerin's as there is one-for-one pasta (sorry baby thia! i tried it!)

has read some reviews on it and really love the place. however, despite of the good food i was dissappointed on the quantity (candice also commented that she is still hungry after the meal) and the waitresses services. The waiter is fine. but i cannot stand the waitress. One of them (not all) is kinda rude. Anyway, will still go back with Baby Thia, the food is relatively delicious~

bought garden ferrero from cocoa tree!! *guility*
i know i shouldn't be consuming it but the colorful packaging is so tempting!!
decided to share with my collegues such that i will reduce the amount consume!
if it is good, gotta buy a box to fatten baby thia!! haha!!

afternoon:

back to work and i seriously do not have the mood.
'must be monday blue", i concluded with candice.

then someone came to check on the aircon becoz hime complained that it was stuffy, no ventilation. In the end, after all the checks, the office became even worse~
*crying* *can't breathe*

the whole office is neither cold nor warm, just practically no air.
my head hurts then~

try the ferrero garden and it is heavenly!! the fruity taste is really yummy and i dunno how to explain. gotta try the other 4 flavors that i haven~ hehe

10 Good Rules to Fine Dining

These are the rules that once learnt, you can used for a life-time.

1. Knives and Forks

This is one of the most common problems for people that are used to flatware (knives and forks) being brought to the table with each course. On a properly set table you usually see a series of forks on the left side of your plate, and a series of spoons and knives on your right (the table is always set for right handed people). The very simple rule is to always work from the outside in; the cutlery farthest away from your plate is for the first course. If you are still unsure what to do, wait and follow your hostess or host.

Always take small portions of food at a time and put your cutlery down between each mouthful. When you put your cutlery down, place it on the plate (never back on the table and do not rest it half on and half off the plate); cross the tips of the two pieces (if there are two) or angle it if there is just one. This tells the server that you are not finished. When you are finished, place your knife and fork together in the centre of the plate vertically. The tines of the fork should point up and the blade of the knife should point to the centre towards the fork.

You should always hold both your knife and fork - you should not cut your food up at the start and then use your fork only (this is an American tradition and is generally fine in America, but not in Europe). The tines of your fork should always point down toward the plate - for difficult foods like peas, you should use your knife to squash them onto the tip of the fork. The fork is not a scoop, do not use it like one.

Do not pick up any cutlery that you drop to the floor. It will be replaced by the server.

2. Soup and Pudding

Soup spoons generally come in two shapes - one is shaped like a round bowl, and the other is shaped like an egg. When eating soup the soup bowl must stay on the table. It is never acceptable to drink your soup from the bowl. To eat your soup, push your spoon away from you starting at the centre of the bowl to the farthest edge. Bring the spoon to your mouth and drink the soup from the edge - do not put the whole spoon in to your mouth. Do not slurp.

Pudding is not to be confused with dessert - they are two entirely separate courses though one can take the place of the other. Pudding is a sweet course, whereas dessert is usually fruit or cheese. To eat pudding you are usually given both a fork and a spoon. The pudding spoon is held in the same way as your knife, with the bowl of the spoon facing inwards, and (for right handed people) is held in the right hand. The pudding fork is used as a pusher only. You do not put a pudding fork in to your mouth. Using the fork, push a small portion of your pudding on to the angled spoon. As you lift the spoon to your mouth, tilt it a little so the bowl is now facing upwards. When you have finished eating, the same rules apply here for placing your cutlery back on the plate.

Occasionally the pudding fork and spoon will be found directly above your plate, rather than in the cutlery at the side.

3. Napkins

A napkin is used for one thing only - dabbing the mouth. Never wipe your mouth with a napkin, you should always dab. Your napkin should be unfolded and placed on your knees. It is never acceptable to tuck your napkin in to the front of your shirt or dress. In ancient times this was normal, nowadays it is the height of vulgarity.

If, for some urgent reason, you must leave the table before you have finished, you should place your napkin on your seat (after you have asked your hostess to excuse you). This tells the server that you plan to return. When you are ready to sit down again, simply replace the napkin upon your knee.

If your napkin drops to the floor, it is acceptable for you to pick it up unless the house has a butler or servants near the table. In those cases they will remove the fallen napkin and replace it with a fresh one. Never place anything in your napkin (especially not food).

When you have finished eating, the napkin should be placed tidily (but not refolded) to the left side of your plate (but not on your plate).

4. Glasses and Wine

Normally you will have two or more glasses at the table. Your glasses are on the right upper side of your plate. You can have up to four glasses. They are usually arranged in a diagonal or roughly square pattern. The top left glass is for red wine. It will usually have a fairly large bowl. Directly below that you will find the white wine glass, that will be smaller. At the top right you will find a champagne glass or perhaps a smaller glass for dessert wines or port. on the bottom right is your water glass.

If someone offers a toast to you, you remain seated while the others may stand. Never raise a glass to yourself. You should never touch glasses with other guests when toasting - it is enough to raise the glass in their direction. Keep eye contact when toasting. If you wish to raise a toast, never tap the side of your glass with a utensil, it is the height of rudeness and you could damage very expensive glassware. It is sufficient to clear your throat.

Do not gulp your wine. It is impolite to become drunk in front of the other guests or your hosts. Sip quietly and occasionally. The purpose of the wine at dinner is to complement your food, not to help you along to way to drunkenness. If your server is refilling your glass, you should never place your hand over or near the glass to indicate when you have enough. You should simply tell the server that you have sufficient or tell him prior to pouring that you do not wish to have any more. Never hold the glass for the server to pour your wine.

5. Body and seating

There will usually be a seating plan near the door of the dining room, or place cards on the table. If neither exist, wait to be seated by your hostess. There are strict rules as to whom sits where at the table and it would be extremely embarrassing if you had to be asked to move, both for you and your hostess. Remember, the hostess governs the table, not the host. The host will sit at the head of the table (this is normally the seat farthest away from doors or commotion. To his right sits the wife of the guest of honour and to his left sits the wife of the next gentleman in order of importance. The hostess will have the guest of honour on her right, and the second most important gentleman on her left. The remainder of the seating plan can often be arbitrary but will always alternate based on gender.

When you are seated at the table your feet should be firmly planted on the floor in front of you. Do not cross your legs, do not lean back on your chair, and do not shake your feet. Your elbows should be at your side at all times. Sit upright and do not lean over your plate when you are eating; bring your food to your mouth.

In England, the correct behaviour is to keep your hands on your lap when you are not using them. In France the rule is to keep your hands above the table at all times. You may place them on the edge of the table but you must never put your elbows on the table.

6. Food in General

You must not start eating until everyone has been served. If there are a large number of guests, the hostess may indicate that you may begin before everyone is served. If this is the case, you should begin. If you take a mouthful which contains something you cannot swallow, you should excuse yourself and remove it in privacy. Absolutely do not do so at the table table and never place it in your napkin or on your plate for all to see.

If you are eating something that has stones or pips in it, you may use your forefinger and thumb to remove them from your mouth. Place them on the side of your plate. You must never use a toothpick at the table, nor should you blow your nose. If you have something stuck in your teeth that you must remove, excuse yourself and go to the bathroom to remove it. It is also acceptable to remove bones with your fingers.

Do not salt your meal before you have tasted it; it is an insult to your hostess. If you do need salt, use the tip of a clean knife (if a salt spoon is not provided in the salt dish) to transfer some salt to the side of your plate which you can use for dipping.

Small pre-dinner snacks must always touch your plate before being put in the mouth. Do not take it from the serving tray and put it straight in your mouth.

7. Bread

If you are having bread with your meal there will usually be a small side plate on the left hand side (or above your left left hand cutlery) of your place setting; if so, use it. If not, it is perfectly acceptable to place your bread directly on the table to the left of your plate. You should not put the bread on your plate directly.

Bread should never be cut. When you wish to eat it, tear a bite sized piece off with your fingers. Don’t worry about crumbs if there are no side plates - the servers will sweep each setting between courses if needs be. Normally there should never be butter served at a dinner table, but these days it is seen from time to time. If there is butter, use your butter knife (found either on the bread plate or to the extreme right of your setting) and transfer sufficient butter for your bread in one go. Place it on the side of your side plate. If there is no side plate your hostess should ensure that you have your own individual butter dish. You should butter each piece of bread as you eat it, rather than buttering it all up front.

8. Conversation

Unless you know every guest at the table very well, you should not discuss politics, religion, or sex at the table. You should also avoid any controversial subjects that may fall outside of the scope of those three topics. Dinner is meant to be enjoyed, not to be a forum for debate.

You should give equal time to the person sitting on your left and your right. It can be difficult to talk easily with strangers but it is absolutely imperative that you do so that everyone can join in on the conversation. This is such a strict rule that I know of a lady of high standing who was seated next to her greatest enemy. In order to comply with the rule, she simply recited the alphabet to him the whole time. Having said that, I would not recommend this behaviour at all as it implies another kind of rudeness.

Do not yell to the ends of the table. You should speak in low tones but you do not have to act like you are in Church or a Public Library - dinner is meant to be enjoyed and the conversation is a fundamental part of that. If you are not very confident with speaking to others, a good rule of thumb is to ask the person questions about themselves (never personal questions). Everyone loves to speak about himself and this will also make you appear to be a good listener.

9. Different Foods

Some foods can be difficult to eat. This is how you should do so:

Artichokes: using your fingers break of one leaf at a time. Holding the spiny end, dip the base in your dish of melted butter or sauce and suck out the fleshy interior with your teeth. Place the remains on your place. Once you reach the soft centre called the heart, use a knife and fork to eat it as you would a steak.

Asparagus: Pick up each stem with your left hand and dip the tip in the butter or sauce. Eat it one bite at a time, never put the whole stalk in your mouth. If you are left with a hard base, you may discard it on your plate. The thick white variety sometimes seen in Europe should always be eaten with a knife and fork, never with your fingers.

Cheese: Small round cheese must always be cut in small pie-shaped wedges. Larger cheeses that have already been cut into a large should be cut from the pointy end first (this is called the nose).

Escargots: These snails are usually served with a special gripping tool and a small fork. Grip the snail shell with the gripper and use the fork to turn the meat out.

Fruit: If a dessert course is served, you will probably have a dessert fork and knife. You should use these on larger pieces of fruit.

10. General Dont’s

Don’t make a fuss. If you don’t like something, leave it.
Don’t blow on hot food to cool it down. Wait for it to cool itself.
Don’t smoke at the table unless invited to by the hostess.
Don’t photograph the table, it looks desperate.
Don’t move your plate after your meal has been served.
Don’t treat the servers badly. It makes you look common.
Don’t eat chicken or chops with your fingers.
Don’t point with your cutlery.
Don’t hold your fork while you drink your wine.
Don’t overstay your welcome

Finally, be sure to say thank you to your host before leaving and send a letter of thanks the next day (if you are lucky you will be invited back).

Food~

Increasing the list of places of food that i want to try, i learn that i shall try not to compromise taste because of price. There is no reason why we should eat awful food just because "it is cheap!", "it is worth it!!"... haiz...

If you are on diet, the more you should eat good food. The amount of food that you can eat is little, then why compromise to lousy food. Go for the best. Afterall what u can eat is little.

If you are too skinny to go on diet, then for all means please stuff your stomach with all the best in town.

Don't forget that there are also good food that is cheap. What i mean is never eat something awful thinking that because it is cheap, so it is awful. Haiz...

anyway, to think about it, the world has so many delicious things and we can only eat 3 meals again. Go around to taste food with someone. When someone is around, then u can try two type of food at a go. Get in three, and you can try three type. Go in four or more, you can try three or more and at a lesser pinch to your pockets.

Enjoy life to the fullest~ Eat what is good, fresh and delicious only.

A Long Post... but worth reading?

recently i have been reading a book on "Japanese women don't get fat or old".
the author of the book is a japanese woman, naomi, who lives in new york.
She explains amazing factorS that how she gain 25 pounds in a few months in new york, and how it was drop when she went back to japan, WITHOUT EXERCISE.

Exercise in japan seems to be part of the lifestyle rather than on purpose.

Some parts of what she say is very true. mayu once told me about how much weight miyabi has lost during the one year in japan. Apart from the way they eat (maybe), another important factor will be the walking in japan. i was told that is japan, distance from train station to house is far. You either walk or cycle. Both ways are weight losing factor. I couldn't cycle. And i couldn't stand walking to train station in the morning coz i don't want to be sweaty when i reach office. Afterall, i have to walk to city hall mrt to my office which is abt 2 to 3 bus-stop distance. Instead, i decide to "make an attempt" to walk home from bishan mrt everyday after work(3 bus stop distance). Next, i decide to influence my colleagues to walk further down the road to clarke quay central to eat lunch rather than to eat somewhere nearby (However, when development started, it may be a super difficult option for everyone).

No wonder the % of obese ppl is japan is lowest in the developed countries.

Be a fishy person

I remember that kkg went to japan for an exchange program around my 21st birthday. When they return, mayu(or miyabi) mention about the cravy for steak, because the beef in japan is generally thinly sliced. (Correct me if i'm wrong.) As a result, they went planet hollywood for steak and it was so satisfying. Naomi spoke about this issue. Japanese eat very little red meat. thinly sliced beef is to ensure the quantity is little. Quality is what they look for. Fish is the main dish in their meals. Fish can be eaten from breakfast, lunch to dinner. Salmon, Tuna, Saba etc was eaten. The amount of fish that a japanese eat in one year is double of an american. Pork or Beef (red meat) was well loved, but eat at a smaller amount and occasionally.

No wonder the average japanese lifespan is much longer than other people.

Eat like an asian, eat rice

The 1st time i watch japanese drama, i was kinda surprise by the fact that rice was eaten for breakfast. Chinese, who ate tons of grains, do not really eat rice for breakfast, but eat porridge instead (but my dad eat rice for breakfast). Seriously i cannot understand who would be eat such a filling meal in the morning. Imagine the breakfast comes with grilled fish, tamagoyaki(japanese omelette), miso soup, vegetables and rice. It just sound like my lunch or dinner rather than breakfast.

Naomi explains the importance of breakfast that will give you good energy to last you till lunch. Usually most ppl about half to one hour before lunch will feel hungry. This is not a good sign, as it will make you feel like eating more during your lunch break. Having a good breakfast makes you feel good from morning till night. Moreover, despite of the variety they have for breakfast, it is all in small quantity. Starting the day without breakfast will make u tired easily and also increase the tendancy to snack around. Rice is complex carbohydrate, which is a better option that the white bread, which is high in sugar content. Of coz, it doesn't means that Japanese do eat white bread, donuts etc, but in small quantity.

i no longer believe in lesser rice diet.

Packaging tells you when to stop SNACKING

Go to a 7-11 or a supermarket like NTUC. See the food packaging of snacks. Huge packets of lays, cookies of 4, 5 inches in diameter. Once you open them and pop one in your mouth, you may ended up like the pringles slogan, "once pop, you can't stop". Japanese snacks instead are generally of smaller packs or individually packed cookies. It suggests that eat one, and keep the rest for later.

I love japanese snacks and i do stock up quite some in my office in the event of hunger, or craving. Each of them are individually packed, thus i'll pop one, and stop. However, when in front of a pack of potato chips, i have a higher tendenacy to finish the whole pack coz it becomes a habit to put one after another into my mouth.

Now i generally put an end to my relationship with Dorito and welcome my new love Bourbon, Meiji and Morinaga. In hime opinion, individuals packs snack (e.g. cookie, cakes) have their other benefits. I can easily share with anyone in office without the need of them to consume immediately. I can throw one in my bag when going to meet client, such that in the event that lunch is delayed, i have something to munch on. Of coz, the option of this snack should be choosen wisely. Instead of those high in sugar content, choose some that are more neutral and healthier.

I learn to snack healthy

Beautiful Display, High FUll

In Chinese household, we have plates of food and a bowl of rice each. we share each plate of delicious food. In (most) Japanese household, the food are put into individual plates and each person have their own share. I used to think that this is because of hygience issues (i thought so during SARS). However, naomi shared that individually display has its reasons.

1stly, each dish is presented in its own plate. the plates for one person are not a matching set, but rather, it matches with the food that it is displaying. Beautiful display will make us eat slower to savour the food and enjoy the display that is presented to us.

2ndly, dividing food into small portion prevents over-eating of one type of food and neglect the rest. It does happens to me very often when eating with my family. It is not that i'm not eating of what i don't like. I may love all the dishes on the table, but i have a high tendency to eat more of the one i like. As a result, my diet is bias toward a particular dish or two.

3rdly, by dividing the food into portions, the chance of over-eat till very full is lower. This is because each portion is divided based on per person, and chances of too much food per person is lesser. (You can literally see how much food is prepare for one person) By the time you finish all the dishes, you are probably 80% full, which is the healthy percentage. In chinese style, the food is prepare without exactly calculate of amount food for each person, so having left-over is highly possible, and chances are u will be urge to finish the left-over if you are one of the slowest, or one of the guys in the family. (This happens to Baby Thia in my house)

maybe i should invest in japanese culteries

Variety is an important word

Japanese women on average eats about 100 variety of food per week, while other ppl eats about 50 types or lesser. The main reason for their healthiest is because of the variety of food they eat. I always remember that a saying that too much of a certain food a never good. Everything should be in moderation. To be able to eat 100 type of food per week must be a result of small portion of everything. Take 100 divide by 7 days and 3 meals. Each meal will have about 4 to 5 dishes. I can understand that easily. Try not to eat the same thing everyday. Baby Thia eat bread every morning, probably rice with mix veg or sliced fish soup every lunch, and home dinner rice with dishes every night. How about change breakfast such that each day is of a different thing? And change the lunch too? Pershaps we may not be able to change much of home dinner, but we can probably request to eat a type of vegetable or fish that was not eaten yet this week. Starting from sunday, i'll monitor and list now the individual food that i eat so that i can monitor the number of types of food that i eat, and how can i increase the variety, while reducing the quantity.

It is probably the variety that slows the aging process

I do understand that living in Singapore, there is a lot of things that we may find it difficult to follow. For instance, if you happen to stay with you family, you may find it difficult to poke into your mother(in my case is father, some ppl may be maid)'s kitchen to determine what is for dinner. However, we may take note of such thing during our daily lunch or even breakfast(if it is not prepared by family). Cut down the daily bread breakfast from 7 times a week to 1 time a week and look for other alternatives. I have been trying out banana breakfast yesterday and i realise that 2 small banana plus a cup of water makes me hungry at 11am. However, by increase it to 3 today, i kinda feel comfortable at 11am. On another day, opt for a low calorie mushroom soup from pokka that can be make easily in 30 seconds if you have hot water ready at all time. I'm trying hard to change my lifestyle for the sake of good health (and of coz to lose weight).

Some random thoughts below:
The idea of good health is important started when i look at my dad and my mum. Both around 60, but weak, and body aching everywhere everyday. Why a 60 to 70 years old japanese can climb a mountain, while my parents have problem even climbing a flight of stairs? I understand that they work hard during the younger times, and thus it may have directly or indirectly damage their health. I learn that such things can be prevented. I do not want to take advantage of a young age now and regret when i reaches their age. I may not be able to control the current diet of my house, but i'm determine to take care of the diet of my family members when i start my own family. Even now, i may not be able to control each day dinner, but i'll give suggestion by saying what i wanna eat to help to make each meal better and healthier. I recently learn that even when dinning out, we should opt for new try. Try restaurant or cafe that we never try before. Order things that we never do. This will help increase in the variety of the food we eat. When eating western food with your loved one, why not order one salad and one main to share? This will increase the vegetable intake, and reduce on meat intake. Opt for fish for the main dish. Select soup food for lunch, but do not finish the soup. Soups outside are just full of MSG. Drink more soup at home instead. Enjoy a meal of grill saba fish with rice for lunch in food court. There is alot of ways to be healthier. It is not at the expense of enjoying lesser food. Choose salad with vinegar dressing rather than casear or thousand island. Of coz casear is fine once a month or lesser, but not often. Choose honey suckle tea over coke, choose hot green tea over honey suckle, choose water over any drinks. One more step to a healthier me. I have wasted 23 years of my health and i do not want to continue. I want to go yellow knife to aurora even when i'm old.
